Red Rover & SI 50

I'm working on some game/playground things and thought some progress shots of "Red Rover" might keep you all coming back to see the finish. Of course that puts the pressure on for me to actually finish. This is acrylic but I've started to work with oils on #2. Just a change of pace. Stay tuned. Also, I forgot to announce the release of Society of Illustrators annual 50. I actually have 5 pieces in it including a gold medal winner. The cover is an ultra cool painting by Mark Ulriksen. I know a piece is ultra cool when I wish I had done it.

Don't Leave

I could feel many of my thousands of visitors jumping ship because of the lack of new work. Well two days in a row now. Come back. "Nasal Envy" is kind of a study, although I really like how it turned out, for some larger animal paintings somewhere in my not so busy future. Maybe it's a little too cartoony? This is also the first time I've really used my rescued siberian in a piece. He's an interesting compliment to the pugs.

Angels Sing

And there is dancing in the street as I post a new piece which can actually be posted. "Tetheregg Specialist" is a character for a new series about playground games. Cool glasses.

I Promise New Stuff is Coming

Wow, I've done a lot of work over the years. Crab Juggler sure does bring back memories. It was one of my first entries into the Society of Illustrators and it got in. Number 45 I think. More stuff on wood and other somewhat lovely things. And I do promise to post some new things soon.

While We Wait

So while I can't put stuff up that I'm working on I will continue to bombard with older things. I really like handmade watercolor paper as a surface. Copper is great too. Between Damien Hirst like pigs and mechanical dogs this series really kept me interested. The faces thing is made up of really small, 1.5" x 1.5", paintings on copper.

Kidsy Stuff

Kids books are a great love of mine. I did one years ago for Random House but can't seem to find the time to write a new one. It takes quality time and I seem to be too distracted. Ideas I have. For me it's the writing part that really takes the time. Here are some things that I have done over the years that might work if I gave them half a chance.

Old Self-Promo

So you don't get bored and leave me. This is self promo stuff from quite awhile ago. I crumpled up these pages and put them in an envelope with a note saying: If you like this wait until you see the things I keep. Clever right? The problem was that I did this soon after 9/11 and I kept getting calls to see if I was for real. They thought the envelope was full of anthrax or something. Well yes I guess I didn't think it through very well. But if I did it now it would be cool.

Extended Doodle

OK, I do these extended doodle things starting from just one thing like a ticket booth. I work on them off and on as I paint or draw. Kinda like this one.

"I Taught it not to Poison the Rats"
Just a new painting. Been too long since the last octopus.

Too Long

Been too long since the last post but you know busy, holidays all of that good excuse stuff. Here are just a few small things for myself and the show here. I try to keep painting between jobs and such. I usually succeed. And I love to do these no pressure drawings. Oh model no. 3a is for a card I did as a reminder bribe.

Couple More Circus Things and Wall o' Affordable Drawings Drawings

Just some more circus stuff and drawings/doodles for my upcoming show. I have a wall of, hopefully, less expensive pieces. Maybe my students can pick up something even.

Wall o' Affordable Drawings (continued)

I have a show coming up and always do a wall of less expensive doodle/drawing stuff. Maybe a few students can buy something.

While I Work

Because I can't show you what I'm working on now I will again return to the past. I did a cool show a few years back based around a fictional carnival: "The BlueGlass Circus/Carnival". A few of the pieces were partially 3d. I don't do them anymore and don't show them much because people want me to keep doing them. They were fun at the time but terribly time consuming and my soul is really 2d. One thing I have noticed and am happy about is that I really have gotten better. It's nice to keep getting better. I guess I'm not lying when I tell my students that if they work hard every day they will get better.
